Taoyuan City Government to Initiate General Waste Reduction, Packaging, and Pre-Treatment Program in 2017

To improve the quality of life of residents near landfills, minimize environmental and health issues associated with temporary garbage disposal sites, and achieve the goals of resource recycling and garbage reduction, the Taoyuan City Government (TYCG) has made plans to initiate General Waste Reduction, Packaging, and Pre-Treatment Program in 2017.

The Department of Environmental Protection expressed that the population of Taoyuan City exceeded 2 million people as of the end of 2010. This figure increased further and reached 2.136 million at the end of September 2016. This growing population is also accompanied by increasing amounts of general waste that must be dealt with. Major annual repairs of the incinerators as well as rainstorms and typhoons made temporary disposal at landfills the only available solution for disposing general waste. To reduce the environmental impact caused by temporary storage of garbage, the Environmental Protection Bureau planned to establish a categorization and packaging unit at the Guanyin District Secured Landfill Site. The unit shall identify and sort resources in household waste in the surrounding areas for recycling, reuse, and reducing the amount of waste. The new facility will also strengthen the flexibility of various districts and regions in allocating waste disposal capacities. After volume reduction, waste destined for temporary storage shall be compressed and packaged to minimize the smell it generates, address other environmental and health concerns, and improve the surrounding appearance and landscape.

Rapid population growth in Taoyuan City has led to massive increases in waste volume. The Department of Environmental Protection hopes to use volume reduction, packaging, and other pre-treatment to sort waste and reduce waste volume. Measures have been initiated to safeguard quality of life as well as natural ecosystems surrounding the landfill while improving relationships with neighboring residents.
