Through combining packaging recycling and green energy, plastic-free consumption becomes the driver of climate change mitigation.

The consumption pattern is biased toward e-commerce. The use of online shopping packaging becomes a non-negligible environmental issue. To encourage logistic companies in Taoyuan to take part in packaging recycling and green energy, the Taoyuan City Government organized the “Packaging Recycling and Green Energy Matching Exhibition” on December 14. Companies in logistics, packaging recycling, green energy and energy storage were invited to the exhibition. The Taoyuan City Government intended to match them and expected them to exchange on the idea of packaging recycling and green energy practice.

Hsien-ming Li, the Deputy Mayor of Taoyuan, stated that Taoyuan is the gateway of the country. Lots of logistics are gathered in Taoyuan. Therefore, Taoyuan must act as the leader in facilitating packaging recycling and helping logistics companies develop green energy. Besides green energy development, in the logistics demonstration area, it is also possible to achieve energy-saving and effective energy management at peak and off-peak hours through smart management and energy-saving facilities. Policy implementation depends on joint efforts by central and local governments. Collaboration among parties in all fields is essential.

The Qingpu Green Energy Logistics Clustering Demonstration Area implements the demonstration planning in a region. Out of the five eco logistics demonstration areas in Taoyuan, it connects the most e-commerce logistics and warehouse centers. Through initial assessment, the Taoyuan City Government determined that the potential for green energy implementation by the logistics centers in the demonstration area is at least 10MW. It is the star player of green energy development out of five demonstration areas.  The Ministry of Economic Affairs statistics show that about 30,000 tonnes of cartons and shopping bags were consumed in Taiwan in 2019 due to online shopping.  It is imperative to implement the green energy logistics clustering demonstration area in order to advocate the central policy of packaging recycling.

This event focuses on the policy and practice of green energy development. First, the Green Energy Promotion Office explained to the logistics companies on the policy instrument for helping the corporations develop green energy. The Office answered the questions from these companies on the establishment of green energy. These companies included Tatung Company, Delta, Chung-Hsin Electric & Machinery Mfg. Corp., Jin Cheng Energy Co., Ltd. and Sungreen Energy Technology Corp. They were offered energy management solutions. By sharing how green energy has been implemented in Taoyuan, the Green Energy Promotion Office demonstrated energy storage and management technologies, fuel cells, the use of micro smart grid, PV system, and the operation and maintenance solution of PV systems, to the logistics companies to facilitate exchange and matching among them. Goldfish Brain, an Internet celebrity devoted to environmental protection, introduced the environmental advantage of packaging recycling and illustrated how to carry out plastic-free shopping in e-commerce.

Deputy Secretary-General Chun-ming Chiu of Taoyuan City, who is also the CEO of Eco-Logistics Office, mentioned that the strategy for reducing packaging incurred from online shopping carried out in the Qingpu Green Energy Logistics Clustering Demonstration Area fulfilled one of the eight principles of eco-logistics. This principle is about enhancing conscious consumption, encouraging behavior change, and guiding residents to learn about the butterfly effect of different delivery options on the environment. Developing green energy in logistics clusters shows that industries play an essential role in climate change and carbon neutrality.  Active promotion of eco logistics strategy in five demonstration areas is the new milestone of environmental sustainability of the Taoyuan City Government.
