“Combat COVID-19 Together for a Better Taoyuan”: Mayor encourages the TYDEP disinfection team

Mayor Wen-Tsan Cheng of Taoyuan City visited today (25th) the Environmental Maintenance and Inspection Squadron of Taoyuan District to thank the efforts of its disinfection team. Mayor Cheng remarked, to upgrade community epidemic control in response to the MOHW Taoyuan Hospital Operation activated by the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC), the district disinfection team was formed with members of the Environmental Maintenance and Inspection Squadron of each district. In addition to enhancing disinfection in the hotspots on the epidemic route found in the outbreak investigation, these disinfection teams also have enhanced the frequency of disinfection in crowd-gathering hotspots, such as train stations, shopping areas, markets and night markets to once weekly and completed the city-wide disinfection in one week. Mayor Cheng also reminded colleagues to make well self-protection before each mission to safeguard Taoyuan’s environmental safety for Taoyuan citizens with well-equipped disinfection equipment.

According to Mayor Cheng, by playing a crucial role in Taiwan’s epidemic control against COVID-19, Taoyuan City has been standing on the frontline of epidemic control, with 11 first-responding hospitals accepting 223 confirmed cases, accounting for 25.7% of all confirmed cases in Taiwan. As the center of epidemic control in Taoyuan, the MOWH Taoyuan Hospital accepted nearly one-half of all confirmed cases in Taoyuan. After the cluster infection of medical personnel broke out this January, the Taoyuan City Government (TYCG) dispatched the disinfection teams formed by the Environmental Maintenance and Inspection Division to disinfect the important areas on the epidemic route found in the outbreak investigation, including the MOWH Taoyuan Hospital, Nanmen Market and some restaurants, supermarkets and shops. In just 2020 alone, a total of 3,325 persons were dispatched to disinfect up to 7,158 locations.

According to Director-General Dr. Li-Teh Lu of the Taoyuan Department of Environmental Protection (TYDEP), the disinfection team was formed last January at the pandemic’s outbreak. Currently, the team has 170 members equipped with 33 disinfection cars and 97 knapsack power sprayers. Since the pandemic broke out, the team has spared no efforts in disinfecting crowd-gathering areas in Taoyuan City. To ease the worries of teachers and students, the team also helps with school disinfection before each semester begins. To ease the worries of elderly people, the team has helped with the disinfection of long-term care institutions. Currently, besides identifying up to 360 crowd-gathering areas, including train stations, markets, shopping areas, night markets and tourist attractions, in the city, the TYDEP has also enhanced the disinfection frequency to once weekly at the mayor’s direction to ceaselessly safeguard the environment of Taoyuan City and always get ready for every situation!

Mayor Cheng recognizes the efforts and achievements of the disinfection team over the last year, particularly the Taoyuan District squadron. Currently, the squadron almost assists in the disinfection of the vicinity around the Nanmen Market every day. In addition, the 33rd Chemical Group of the Ministry of National Defense (NMD) also joined the disinfection in 7km radius around the MOHW Taoyuan Hospital for many village chiefs and citizens to feel safe. Mayor Cheng also presented the tangerine gift set to each member of the disinfection team to symbolize auspice and fortune, hoping that disinfection team members can improve their self-protection and physical strength while busy disinfecting the city for citizens. Let’s hand over Taoyuan’s epidemic firewall to the disinfection team. Mayor Cheng specifically reminded team members to make well self-protection before each mission, including wearing a mask and googles. The mayor also asked the TYDEP to lower the requirements for releasing the OT pay and allowances for team members to give them the biggest support and environment.

The TYDEP also recalled today all members of the disinfection team for recurrent training to strengthen their epidemic control knowledge and disinfection safety regulations. The TYDEP also makes continual improvement of the disinfection equipment. Besides purchasing lighter and quieter knapsack power sprayers, the TYDEP has also assembled two mist makers to enhance the efficiency and expand the range of disinfection. In addition, the TYDEP has also bought additional insurance for members of the disinfection team to double the coverage of their rights and interests, because they are the frontline unknown heroes of epidemic control to safeguard environmental safety for Taoyuan citizens.

Others accompanying Mayor Chen in the consolation tour today included TYDEP Director-General Dr. Li-Teh Lu, Director-General Ho-Shun Chan of the Department of Public Information, Taoyuan District Executive Yu-Ming Chen, and Director Wen-Lin Luo of the Environmental Maintenance and Inspection.
