Taoyuan Citywide Disinfection: Department of Environmental Protection Committed to Controlling and Preventing Epidemic Outbreak

In view of the growing severity of the COVID-19 epidemic, the number of confirmed local cases in the country is increasing rapidly every day, reaching 333 cases yesterday. Both Taipei and New Taipei City have entered Level 3 Alert, and as the gateway to the country, Taoyuan City is also undertaking stringent measures to prevent further escalation of the epidemic. This means various large-scale activities have been canceled or postponed, and major public venues in the city, including activity centers, sports centers, etc. have also temporarily closed until June 8. Mayor Cheng Wen-tsan, Director-General Lu Li-Teh of the Department of Environmental Protection, and the disinfection team of the Environmental Maintenance and Inspection Division today (18th) visited the areas adjacent to a Carrefour store in Zhongli District to conduct disinfection operations. This marked the commencement of citywide disinfection operations through three stages. By the end of May, epidemic hot spots and 100 boroughs, 404 crowded areas, 12 districts and 34 key residential areas will undergo disinfection, so that the public can feel safe in the challenge of fighting the epidemic together.

Taoyuan Mayor Cheng Wen-tsan pointed out that the city's epidemic prevention team has launched an enhanced version of the epidemic control program, which is to "accelerate epidemic investigation, enhance quarantine measures, widen inspection criteria and strengthen disinfection campaigns." He also asked citizens of the city to make concerted efforts to prevent epidemic escalation and overcome this difficult time together. Mayor Cheng also noted that in order to carry out the task of citywide disinfection, the Department of Environmental Protection has planned a three-stage expansion of the disinfection plan. The first stage is to disinfect the hot spots of the confirmed patients' past activities immediately; the second stage, from May 17 to May 23, will expand the area of environmental disinfection to include the local boroughs of hotspots and surrounding boroughs to a total of about 100 boroughs, as well as 404 crowded areas. The third stage, from May 24 to May 31, shall target 12 districts and 34 key living areas in the city to carry out citywide environmental disinfection.

Director-General Lu Li-Teh of the Department of Environmental Protection stated that the first stage of disinfection was to immediately disinfect the hotspots of the confirmed patients' footprints, especially in Zhongli District, where the most confirmed patients' past activities are located, such as stations, restaurants, hypermarkets, post offices, etc. These locations are promptly disinfected upon first notice, and then disinfection operations are continued for one week. In the second stage of disinfection, in addition to the 404 locations in the previously listed crowded hotspots, such as transportation stations, market areas, shopping centers and medical institutions, the area of the footprint hotspots and the surrounding areas will be expanded to about 100 boroughs to eliminate all threats of the virus. The third stage of the citywide disinfection will begin on May 24, and the EPA will target the residential and commercial areas across 12 districts. The 34 living areas cover around 450 boroughs, which will undergo thorough disinfection to form a safe and clean environmental protection network for the entire city.

In the face of the constantly evolving COVID-19 pandemic, the Department urges all citizens to wear a mask as an essential protective measure. All residential communities and households should carry out disinfection activities, such as through alcohol or diluted bleach to strengthen the cleaning of door handles, often-used switches in common areas, tables and chairs, to ensure health and safety. Outdoor public spaces shall be entrusted to the hardworking cleaning crews who are always at the forefront of epidemic prevention. The Department calls on all people to work together to prevent the epidemic by thoroughly executing all protective measures, so that the epidemic can come under control and normal life can resume as early as possible.
