Mayor Cheng ordered the Environmental Protection Bureau to carry out a City-wide Disinfection, and establish a Community Security Net

The situation of the epidemic changes in an instant as there has been 7 days of over 100 confirmed domestic cases and a total of more than 1,000 confirmed cases. The national epidemic alert level has been raised to Level 3 and the Taoyuan City Government’s Department of Environmental Protection has activated a three-phase city-wide disinfection on May 10. The disinfection has been expanded to key living areas of the City’s 12 Districts on the 24th, and Taoyuan City Mayor Cheng Wen-tsan arrived at Zhuang-Jing Elementary School following the epidemic prevention meeting this morning (24th) to greet the teams that have been tirelessly carrying out the disinfection operations during this time. The Mayor also gifted them with “Energy Boxes” containing Taoyuan’s specialty goods to thank the team members for their efforts in safeguarding the city’s environmental safety.

Taoyuan Mayor Cheng Wen-tsan said that the anti-epidemic disinfection teams in Taoyuan were already established and undergoing training since last year as it is composed of 193 anti-epidemic disinfection personnel, 37 disinfection vehicles, and 137 backpack sprayers. All of the team members are experienced and have endured the previous outbreak in Taoyuan, so they are quite familiar with the equipment. Mayor Cheng inspected and thanked these team members as President Tsai also came to visit and encourage these disinfection teams for their hard work at the beginning of the year. Mayor Cheng also noted that in order to carry out the task of citywide disinfection, the Department of Environmental Protection has planned a three-stage expansion of the disinfection plan. The first stage is to disinfect the hot spots of the confirmed patients' past activities immediately; the second stage, from May 17 to May 23, will expand the area of environmental disinfection to include the local boroughs of hotspots and surrounding boroughs to a total of about 200 boroughs, as well as 404 crowded areas. The third stage, from May 24 to May 31, shall target 12 districts and 34 living areas in the city to carry out citywide environmental disinfection. Information about dates of the disinfections can be located on the Taoyuan Department of Environmental Protection’s official Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/tydep.gov) or the Environmental Cleaning Team’s official website (https://www.tyemid.gov.tw/DisinfectionPublicity).

Department of Environmental Protection Director Lu Li-Teh said that in view of the escalating severity of COVID-19 within the country and the alert level being increased to Level 3, the Department is making it clear to everyone that wearing a mask is absolutely necessary to combat the epidemic. People should definitely wear their masks and maintain social distancing when taking out the trash to protect themselves and the Cleaning Teams.

The Department has stated that all residential communities and households should carry out disinfection activities, such as through alcohol or diluted bleach to strengthen the cleaning of door handles, often-used switches in common areas, tables and chairs, to ensure health and safety. Outdoor public spaces shall be entrusted to the hardworking cleaning crews who are always at the forefront of epidemic prevention. The Department calls on all people to work together to prevent the epidemic by thoroughly executing all protective measures, so that the epidemic can come under control and normal life can resume as early as possible.
