Taoyuan is awarded with Award of Excellence for Climate Change Action Evaluation 9 years in a Row

The influence of extreme climates in recent times has resulted in record-high temperatures and even rare droughts are impacting Taiwan, and action needs to be taken immediately to address climate change. The Taoyuan City Government has been actively promoting ecologistics, energy transition, energy-saving and carbon reduction to create a sustainable environment. The City Government has been recognized by the Executive Yuan’s Environmental Protection Administration and was awarded the “2020 Evaluation of Performance for Local Environmental Protection Agency's Actions in Response to Climate Change” recently with an Award of Excellence for 9 consecutive years, affirming that Taoyuan City can continue to work towards being a sustainable city despite seeing growth in  population and having continuous industrial and commercial development.

Department of Environmental Protection Director Lu Li-Teh pointed out that Taoyuan, as an industrial city, in addition to propelling growth in the economy and the population, the biggest issue that the city has to deal with is greenhouse gas emissions. The industrial energy sector accounts for approximately 70% of the emissions, and has made it a key issue for the City. Thus, the City Government has drawn up corresponding measures to actively work with major energy users and major carbon-emission consumers by providing industrial energy-saving counseling and boiler-cleaning. The Department has also used subsidy programs to encourage businesses to replace high carbon-emission boilers with natural gas, and replace relatively older equipment with newer ones to upgrade production capacities while also reducing emissions of pollutants.

In the era where e-commerce platforms are prospering, it has given rise to many logistics companies as nearly 80% of the country’s logistics companies are located in Taoyuan. The center of logistics often has large transportation vehicles that cause traffic jams, air pollution, and have even affected peoples’ activity spaces. To resolve this big issue generated from the logistics industry, the City Government established the “EcoLogistics Project Office” in 2020  to integrate and establish low-carbon logistic fleets. The primary policy is to prioritize the use of diesel vehicles that meet Stage 4 and 5 emission standards, and also require the gradual replacement of the old Stage 1 to 3 diesel vehicles. The Office will then promote packaging, recycling, and reusing while assisting logistics companies in green development to achieve conservation of energy and the effective use of off-peak energy management.

Department of Environmental Protection Director Lu Li-Teh said that the Taoyuan Green City project has achieved remarkable results since its administration, but climate change is still a key issue that cannot be overlooked. The City Government will also set up an inter-bureau Sustainable Development Council this year to continue promoting local sustainable development goals (SDGs) and as there are international SDGs, the future is filled with plenty of challenges as Taoyuan City has completed its Voluntary Local Review (VLR) and uses “Friendly Prosperity and Sustainable Happiness” as the overall development vision. The future of Taoyuan City depends on everyone’s efforts and protection.
