Taoyuan revitalizes post-COVID-19 green economy, with green consumption of NT$7.8 billion topping the nation

.In order to revitalize the green economy after the COVID-19 pandemic, the Taoyuan City Government has consolidated the “green life” of enterprises and people through food, clothing, housing, transportation, education, entertainment and shopping and promotes green procurement by government agencies and private enterprises through initiatives such as Green Marks, green stores, green restaurants, eco-friendly hotels, green shopping festivals, etc. According to statistics of the green purchasing power of Taoyuan City in 2020, the amount of green consumption reached NT$7.8 billion, ranking Taoyuan the top in the nation, while also setting a new historic high (including NT$5.7 billion purchased by private enterprises, NT$1.49 billion of green products sold in Green Stores and green procurements by government agencies totaling NT$590 million).

Lu Li-Teh, Director General of the Environmental Protection Bureau of the Taoyuan City Government, said that in order to develop Taoyuan into a low-carbon green city, it has had to accelerate the promotion of green living and green consumption through local bylaws. Not only has it achieved outstanding results in green procurement in 2020, it has also received full marks in the EPA’s  "Promoting Private Enterprises and Organizations to Implement Green Procurement Program." Taoyuan City is ranked higher than other city throughout the nation, thus making it a role model of low-carbon green city.

The Environmental Protection Bureau stated that in line with the Environmental Protection Agency’s Green Living Policy, Taoyuan City has also actively promoted the certification of eco-friendly products. Among the more than 4,700 Green Mark-accredited products nationwide, eco-friendly products produced by enterprises in Taoyuan City accounted for a quarter, reaching 1,032 products. In addition, there are 1,435 green stores in Taoyuan City, with green distribution channels spread throughout the city. The public can elect to buy to products affixed with the Green Mark at these green stores. At the same time, the Environmental Protection Bureau is also actively counseling the green service industry in Taoyuan City, including green restaurants and eco-friendly hotels. This provides the public with more green lifestyle choices, so that green consumption can be deeply embedded in daily life. According to the Environmental Protection Bureau, green service providers will occasionally launch eco-friendly preferential programs (such as staying in environmentally friendly accommodation, reducing single-use items and offering additional discounts to customers) to encourage people to respond to green living programs and support the green service industry, thus achieving mutually beneficial effects. This will indirectly result in a decrease in resource waste and contribute to the environment.

Lu Li-Teh also emphasized that the city will continue to promote green living for all its citizens. The City Government will take the lead in promoting green consumption, green office, green tourism, etc., combined with the participation of various private sector enterprises. The city hopes that through concrete action, the power of local green consumption will be fully maximized and the public will respond positively by adopting a green lifestyle.
